This interview with Jonathan Schuler took place via Zoom on September 3, 2020. Jonathan is a third grade teacher at a charter school in Richmond, California. At the time of this interview, he is in his third week of remote-teaching. He has a class of 28 students, mostly Latinx, and 10 of those students are English language learners. His charter school made the decision to go fully remote early in the summer, and he was one of the teachers who volunteered over the summer to help brainstorm ways to make this work. A lot of the specifics of online learning have been left up to the individual teachers, and everyone is finding different things that work for them. Jonathan is using Zoom, Prodigy, and other online learning platforms and games. Both he and his students seem like they've adapted well given the limitations. He has found ways to make sure certain groups get extra attention if they need it, allow his students to socialize during recess, and gauge whether or not students are following along, but he's missing many aspects of being in the classroom together.
Rachel Meirs is an artist and musician currently living in Brooklyn, New York on the unceded land of the Lenape people. In her woodcuts, paintings, and sound-based work, she uses food as a jumping off point for exploring family, care, and bodies. She received her Masters in Public Health from Columbia University in 2019, where she began her still ongoing research on creative gig workers and health care access.
