Jonathan Schuler is a third grade teacher at a charter school in Oakland, California. At the time of this interview, he is in his third week of remote-teaching. He has a class of 28 students, mostly Latinx, and 10 of those students are English language learners. His charter school made the decision to go fully remote early in the summer and he was one of the teachers who volunteered to help brainstorm ways to make this work over the summer, though a lot of the specifics of online learning have been left up to the individual teachers, and everyone is finding different things that work for them. Jonathan is using zoom, prodigy, and other online learning platforms and games. Both he and his students seem like they've adapted well given the limitations, he's found ways to make sure certain groups get extra attention if they need it, to allow his student's to socialize during recess, and gauge whether or not student's are following along, but he's missing many aspects of being in the classroom together.
