Summary:

The interview was conducted with Jahmeeka Hughes at the Youth Center in Hudson, NY on Friday June 27, 2025. Jahmeeka starts by describing her role at the YouthCenter, going from seasonal employee to full time working primarily with the kindergarten through second graders at the afterschool program at the church.She discusses what it’s like to work with teens whose first jobs are at theYouth Center and the work she’s done to make the interview process more approachable and skill-building. She describes her childhood in Catskill; playing high school sports; biking with friends, her siblings, and her grandfather who lived in Catskill; and visiting the Youth Center in the summers with her uncle who lived in Hudson. Jahmeeka documents her current life in Greenport with her dog Stitch and shares her dreams for herself and Hudson.This interview might be of interest to anyone wanting to learn more about theHudson Youth Center, careers in childcare, the needs and experiences of youth in the Hudson area, and Catskill.

Sofia Sacerdote is a medical student at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.She is white, in her mid-twenties, and grew up in a small town in New Hampshire. She has worked with kids as a babysitter, camp counselor at a girls sleepaway camp, tutor, camp nurse, and most recently at Rhode Island Training School teaching sex ed and running narcan training.
